The Global Carbon Market
The financial market for carbon trading is now firmly established. Individuals and companies can now purchase carbon credits to offset carbon emissions caused by their activities, both private and business.
Projects around the world that can attract the funds available for supporting carbon offset fall into two categories, those officially certified by the UNFCCC (such as Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Certified Emission Reductions) and those that satisfy the demands of the Voluntary Market.
This emerging global ‘non-compliance’ or ’voluntary’ market has emerged from private sector organizations that are interested in purchasing carbon offsets even if they are not UN certified. Most voluntary market projects involve tree planting at present, rather than management of natural forest or more complicated alternative energy schemes, and in general parallel closely the UN guidelines for carbon offsetting.
Carbon Tanzania currently operates with funds raised from the Voluntary market. The main source of funding is donations derived from ethically minded tourists who wish to offset the carbon released as a result of their air travel to and from Tanzania. This is a logical mitigation for people who are travelling to Tanzania to experience its natural wildlife and habitats since the funds are used directly for a local forest habitat conservation project.
