Fuelwood and energy alternatives

Currently over 80% of Tanzanians are dependant on fuel wood as a source of energy in both rural and urban environments.

With this in mind the National Government of Tanzania has created a vision for reducing our dependency on imported petroleum products and providing environmentally sound alternatives. In response to this, the Women’s Development for Science and Technology Association (WODSTA) have begun developing compact sawdust briquettes and simple user friendly briquette machines.

Briquettes are a form of biomass constructed from waste sawdust compressed with water to form a stable, cheaper alternative to charcoal. In comparative tests briquettes show a saving of 30% by weight and 15.3% by cost when compared to wood.
