Tanzanian tour operators
If you are an in-bound tour operator based in Tanzania, you can offset the carbon emissions produced by your company’s activities in a number of ways. There are two main areas of carbon offset applicable to such companies.
Each individual tourist can offset the emissions due to their air travel to and from Tanzania. If you deal directly with your guests you can encourage them, or oblige them, to neutralise the carbon emissions due to their air travel by adding an amount to their invoice. On the other hand, they may have already done this through their travel agent. Please check with the agents with whom you work if this is the case.
Your guest is flying from the United States – offset cost for one return flight = US$50
Your guest is flying from Europe – offset cost for one return flight = US$30
Your company operations here in Tanzania are responsible for a certain amount of emissions each year. To offset these emissions and to ensure that your company can be referred to as “Carbon Neutral” you need to first assess your carbon footprint to obtain an idea of the tonnage of carbon released by your company each year. Once this is known the amount of money required to mitigate these emissions can be calculated. Some companies will have already conducted a full carbon audit for this purpose. If your company has done this, and you wish to buy offsets from Carbon Tanzania, then please contact us.

In Tanzania, the tourism industry contributes significantly to carbon emissions. The majority of the carbon footprint is derived from flights originating largely in the United States or Europe, while the smaller part of the emissions can be attributed to driving while on safari in Tanzania.
We calculate CO2 based on figures supplied by the Bureau of Transport and Communications Economics (BTCE) (69.7 grams CO2 / megajoules and 38.6 megajoules / Lt Diesel). Current figures put a tonne of carbon at 20USD on the global market, and based on this we are able to establish the CO2 emitted during your safari and relate it to a cost.
The table below outlines the respective carbon emitted from flights and the offset cost required to neutralise this affect. By donating the suggested amount per origin you are able to offset the carbon emissions produced to bring you to Tanzania and provide an income, education and awareness to the local communities and villages involved.
| Safari * | Distance and fuel consumed |
Total CO2 emitted |
Direct cost of CO2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Northern Tanzania (Driving) | 1200km / 8 days | 504kg CO2 | 11USD |
| Southern Tanzania (Driving) | 1500km / 8 days | 630kg CO2 | 13USD |
| Western USA to Tanzania to Western USA | Flight | c. 3.5 tonnes | 70USD |
| Eastern USA to Tanzania to Eastern USA | Flight | c. 2.75 tonnes | 55USD |
| Europe to Tanzania to Europe | Flight | c. 2.0 tonnes | 40USD |
