Carbon Offsets

Carbon offsetting is a market-based tool that has been developed to help address human induced climate change. A carbon offset is simply a credit that can be purchased by one party that symbolizes the reduction of GHG emissions by another party. Offsets are sold in metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e). Buying one ton of a carbon offset is intended to counteract the emissions generated by an individual’s or a business’s activities, such as driving, flying or turning on a light bulb.

Because GHG emissions are a global problem, it is possible to implement global solutions. Therefore, the carbon sequestered through promoting natural forest conservation, growth and regeneration in Tanzanian forests will have global benefits in reducing the amount of CO2e that enters our atmosphere.

Co-Benefits

Co-benefits are benefits that go above and beyond mere carbon sequestration. CarbonTanzania's carbon offset projects provide many additional benefits. These values include:

  • The planting of indigenous trees
  • Watershed and land use planning for effective forest protection
  • A healthy ecosystem that protects the rich forest biodiversity
  • Economic opportunities for rural communities
